Very Dutch: Do you have to follow a specialty, No, but if you want to learn, not words but deeds, 70% of Dutch divers can not or do not handle the right way with an SMB! (though they do call of course ...)
More and more often you have to show at holiday locations that you can handle an SMB without having to get stuck in your own line or that of your buddy or your buoyancy not under control! it becomes an obligation in an increasing number of places to leave an SMB when you finish the dive, therefore follow this specialty which is also very fun to do!
You'll find them everywhere in the world. From those orange or yellow "safety sausages" that protrude above the water. We are talking about Delayed Surface Marker Buoy's, or DSMB. In addition, during drift dives you regularly dived behind a guide who carried a buoy along the reel with the entire dive, so that the boat can follow and pick up the divers. We are talking about an SMB. The use of a DSMB or SMB increases your safety in, on and underwater. Other divers can see that you are in the water and boat traffic knows that there are divers among them. A DSMB is also very practical for safety stops.
During the PADI SMB specialty course, you will learn techniques in a safe way in a stationary and floating position underwater to let a DSMB up and handle underwater. You will also learn how to dive with an SMB the easiest.
The PADI SMB specialty course consists of 1 pool dive * and 2 specialty dives in the open water. In the swimming pool, we calmly take care of the techniques, so that we can practice in the open water without having to go upstairs. (* Swimming pool dive is optional and in consultation)
